No emergency closures are reported anywhere in the DMV. Charter school schedules vary by campus.

What's actually happening with DC schools right now

The first day of school for DC public school students was Monday, August 24, 2026. Pre-K students had a staggered start beginning Thursday, August 27. So the school year is already underway - but today, Saturday, is simply a weekend day.

As of this writing, WTOP's Stormdesk - the DMV's most-watched source for emergency school closings - reports no closings or delays. The team updates that page regularly as conditions change.

The next scheduled closure for all DCPS schools is Monday, September 1. DCPS observes Labor Day as a full school holiday. That means the first complete five-day school week of the year begins Tuesday, September 2, 2026.

How DCPS handles unplanned closings

The decision to delay and close schools is made with careful consideration of road safety, sidewalk safety, and meal availability. When a closure is called, it applies to all DCPS schools - elementary, middle, and high school alike.

For weather closures and emergencies, DCPS posts updates at dcps.dc.gov and on @dcpublicschools. Updates go up before 6:00 AM on affected days. WTOP's Stormdesk, NBC4 Washington, and FOX 5 DC all carry live DMV-wide closure lists that pull from official school system announcements.

Parents always have the choice to keep their kids at home, pick them up early, or send them late - even when DCPS decides to remain open.

Charter schools are a different story

DC is unusual. The District is home to one of the largest public charter school sectors in the nation - nearly half of all public school students in DC attend charter schools, which may follow their own academic calendars.

DC public charter schools set their own academic calendars independently. Families with children in charter schools should check directly with their school for specific dates. Schools may have delayed entries, early dismissals, or closures due to extreme weather - the DC Public Charter School Board collects each school's operating status during those events. Their status page is at dcpcsb.org.

Key dates left in the 2026-27 DCPS school year

In addition to federal holidays, DCPS schedules its own professional development days, record days, and parent-teacher conference closures throughout the year. Parent-teacher conference days - October 13, February 11, and March 12 in 2026-27 - are also no-school days for students.

The big breaks: Thanksgiving break runs November 25-27, 2026; winter break runs December 21, 2026 through January 1, 2027; spring break runs March 22-26, 2027; and the last day of school is June 17, 2027. Snow-day make-up days are scheduled for June 22-23 if needed.

The official DCPS calendar - including a downloadable PDF - lives at dcps.dc.gov/page/dcps-calendars.
