As of Friday, August 28, 2026, DC Public Schools are open and in session. The 2026-27 school year started Monday, August 24, and no emergency closures are currently listed by WTOP, FOX 5, or NBC4. To be certain, always verify at dcps.dc.gov or your local TV station before heading out the door.

What the closures trackers show right now

WTOP's Stormdesk - the DMV's most-watched closures feed - reports no closings or delays at this time, and its team updates the page regularly as conditions change. FOX 5 DC and NBC4 Washington run parallel closures pages that update in real time for school systems across the District, Maryland, and Northern Virginia.

That means, absent a last-minute weather or emergency announcement, students in K-12 DCPS schools should be in class today.

Where the school year stands

The first day of school for DCPS students in the 2026-27 year was Monday, August 24, 2026. Pre-K students started on a staggered schedule beginning Thursday, August 27. Today, August 28, is only the fifth day of the year for most students and the second for Pre-K.

DC Public Schools serves roughly 50,000 students from pre-K3 through grade 12 across 116 schools in all eight wards. The system is separate from the city's charter sector, which is independently governed and sets its own calendar.

How DCPS decides to close

DCPS says it strives to keep schools open whenever possible and is reluctant to close, prioritizing students' access to academic instruction, nutritious meals, and extracurricular programming.

When there is inclement weather, DCPS works with the DC government and other agencies to get current information, and the decision to delay or close is made with careful consideration of road safety, sidewalk safety, and meal availability. For weather closures and emergencies, DCPS posts updates at dcps.dc.gov and on @dcpublicschools, with updates posted before 6:00 a.m. on affected days.

The most recent system-wide closure happened back in January. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced DC Public Schools would be closed on Wednesday, January 28, following a major winter storm. DCPS later made several changes to its 2025-26 calendar to make up for the lost instruction time.

Charter schools are a separate question

DC has 123 public charter schools, and each sets its own academic calendar. Many align with DCPS for major holidays, but first day, last day, and professional development days vary widely. Charter schools may have delayed entries, early dismissals, or closures due to extreme weather, and families can check the DC Public Charter School Board's operating status page at dcpcsb.org.

DC public charter schools set their own academic calendars independently, so families with children in charter schools should check directly with their school for specific dates.

Key dates coming up on the 2026-27 DCPS calendar

  • Thanksgiving break: November 25-27, 2026
  • Winter break: December 21, 2026 through January 1, 2027
  • First day back from winter break: Monday, January 4, 2027
  • Spring break: March 22 through March 26, 2027

The DCPS calendar also includes scattered "no school for students" days - professional development days, parent-teacher conference days, and half-day records days - that don't fall on obvious holidays.
