Where the school year stands right now

DC Public Schools (DCPS) opened for the 2026-27 school year on August 24, 2026. Pre-K students had a staggered start, beginning Thursday, August 27. September 29 is a regular school day. No district-wide closure or delay is posted at DCPS.dc.gov as of this writing.

The calendar covers 180 instructional days across four marking terms. The last day of school is Thursday, June 17, 2027.

Key dates for the rest of the year

DCPS schedules three major breaks during 2026-27. Thanksgiving break runs Wednesday, November 25 through Friday, November 27, 2026.

Winter break runs Monday, December 21, 2026 through Friday, January 1, 2027. Classes resume Monday, January 4, 2027.

Spring break runs Monday, March 22 through Friday, March 26, 2027. Classes resume Monday, March 29.

Beyond the major breaks, the DCPS calendar includes scattered no-school days for students: professional development days, parent-teacher conference days, and half-day records days. They do not fall on obvious holidays. Parent-teacher conference days are scheduled for Tuesday, October 13, 2026, and Thursday, February 11, 2027.

How DCPS handled this calendar

DCPS finalized this schedule as part of a three-year release covering school years 2026-27, 2027-28, and 2028-29, after collecting feedback from more than 1,800 community members in a fall 2024 survey. That feedback shaped three specific changes: a two-week winter break, a spring break aligned with neighboring Montgomery and Prince George's counties, and a school year that ends before the Juneteenth holiday.

Charter schools are different

Each of DC's 123 public charter schools sets its own academic calendar. Many align with DCPS for major holidays, but first day, last day, and professional development days vary widely. If your child attends a charter, go directly to that school's website for its calendar.

How to check for same-day closures

Should snow or severe winter weather be expected, families will be notified via email and text message. DCPS also posts its operating status at dcps.dc.gov and on @dcpublicschools social media accounts. For weather emergencies, DCPS posts closure and delayed-opening status before 6:00 AM.

The district says it strives to keep schools open whenever possible, and is reluctant to close because students depend on schools for academic instruction, nutritious meals, and extracurricular programming. State law requires a minimum of 180 school days, so any snow days that push below that mark must be made up at the end of the year.

Local TV stations Fox 5, NBC4, and WTOP all run live closings-and-delays trackers that pull DCPS alerts the moment the district issues them. As of the time this page was checked, there are no closings or delays to report.

DMV neighbors for comparison

Fairfax County Public Schools, the region's largest Virginia district, also started on August 24. Just across the state line in Maryland, both Montgomery County Public Schools and Prince George's County Public Schools began Tuesday, August 25.
