DCPS 2026-27: the key dates at a glance

The first day of school for DCPS was Monday, August 24, 2026. Pre-K students had a staggered start beginning Thursday, August 27, 2026. Winter break runs from Monday, December 21, 2026 through Friday, January 1, 2027. Spring break is Monday, March 22 through Friday, March 26, 2027, with school resuming Monday, March 29. The last day of school is Thursday, June 17, 2027.

DCPS observes most federal holidays, including Labor Day, Indigenous Peoples' Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, and Memorial Day. Snow-day make-up days are scheduled for June 22-23 if needed.

Community feedback shaped the calendar: families overwhelmingly preferred a 3-day Thanksgiving break, a spring break aligned to DC Emancipation Day, and ending the school year before the last week in June.

What about DC's charter schools?

Public charter schools now educate 48% of all DC public school students. According to the DC Public Charter School Board (DCPCSB), more than 47,500 students attend 132 charter campuses operated by 67 Local Education Agencies (LEAs).

Each of DC's 123 public charter schools sets its own academic calendar. Many align with DCPS for major holidays, but first day, last day, and professional development days vary widely. If your child attends a charter, go straight to the school's website - the DCPS calendar does not apply to them.

Suburban DC: Maryland and Virginia start dates

Families just across the District line have nearly identical schedules this year. Montgomery County Public Schools' 2026-27 school year began on August 25, 2026, and concludes on June 11, 2027. Prince George's County Public Schools also started August 25, 2026, with the year running through June 15, 2027. Fairfax County Public Schools started the same day as DCPS - August 24, 2026 - takes the exact same spring break week of March 22-26, 2027, and finishes a day earlier, on June 16, 2027.

How to check if schools are closed today

Weather happens. Should snow or severe winter weather be expected, DCPS families are notified via email and text message, and operating status is posted at dcps.dc.gov and on the @dcpublicschools social media accounts. Updates are posted before 6:00 AM on affected days.

The decision to delay or close schools is made with careful consideration of road safety, sidewalk safety, and meal availability. State law requires a minimum of 180 school days, so some snow days will need to be made up at the end of the year.

For charter school closures specifically, schools may have delayed entries, early dismissals, or closures due to extreme weather - check the DC Public Charter School Board's operating status page at dcpcsb.org.

Getting to school: Kids Ride Free

The Kids Ride Free (KRF) program allows students to ride for free on Metrobus and Metrorail while traveling within the District. SY 2025-26 Kids Ride Free SmarTrip cards remain valid through September 30, 2026. New cards for 2026-27 are distributed through schools.

Parent-teacher conferences

Parent-teacher conference days for 2026-27 are scheduled for Tuesday, October 13, 2026, and Thursday, February 11, 2027. Individual schools also hold back-to-school nights throughout the fall - check dcps.dc.gov for specific dates.
