Capitals open season with 5-2 win over Carolina

Washington scored three times in the first period and never looked back, with Alex Tuch scoring twice to lead the Capitals past the Hurricanes at Lenovo Center.

Washington wasted no time. The Capitals went into Lenovo Center and beat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-2, banking two points in their first game of the season.

The first period set the tone. Alex Tuch opened the scoring on a wrist shot, with Pierre-Luc Dubois and Alex Ovechkin picking up the assists. Cole Hutson answered right back for Washington, finishing off a snap shot set up by Ilya Protas and Aliaksei Protas. Then Tuch struck again before the period was out, converting a backhand with Dubois and Tom Wilson assisting. Three goals. One period. Washington was firmly in control.

The second period got messier. Jakob Chychrun scored on a snap shot, assisted by Dylan Strome, to push the lead to 4-0. Carolina finally got on the board when Sebastian Aho converted his own snap shot, assisted by Andrei Svechnikov and Jackson Blake. Then Ryan Leonard answered for Washington almost immediately, also on a snap shot, with Strome and Chychrun combining for the assists. Strome finished the period with two points. Chychrun ended up with a goal and an assist.

Logan Stankoven closed it out in the third, tipping one in off feeds from K'Andre Miller and William Carrier to make it 5-1. Carolina's final margin came from that lone Aho goal.

Tuch led everyone with two goals and finished as Washington's top point-getter on the night. Dubois was equally busy, collecting two assists, both on Tuch's goals. Carolina, now sitting at 0-1-1 with one point, got little else from a power play that never really threatened once Washington established its lead.

Carrier's name showed up on Stankoven's tip-in late in the third, the last Capital to register a point on the night.
