Capitals fall 4-2 in Raleigh as Svechnikov runs the show

Washington dropped to 3-3-0 after Carolina's Andrei Svechnikov scored twice and added an assist at Lenovo Center on Tuesday night.

The Capitals left Raleigh with nothing. Carolina beat Washington 4-2 at Lenovo Center, and it was never particularly close after the second period.

Boone Jenner got things started in the first, burying a snap shot with Ryan Leonard picking up the assist. Washington answered in the second on a Justin Holl snap shot, his first goal of the season, set up by Dylan Strome and Leonard. That made it a one-goal game. It did not stay that way.

Carolina pulled away in a busy middle frame. Andrei Svechnikov scored on a poke to put the Hurricanes up 2-1, with William Carrier and Sebastian Aho assisting. Then Eric Robinson beat Washington on a snap shot to make it 3-1, with Jackson Blake and Sean Walker getting credit. The Capitals could not dig out.

Svechnikov added a backhand goal in the third. Three points on the night. Aho finished with two assists. Mark Jankowski closed it out with a backhand of his own, with Svechnikov and Aho combining for the helpers. Final: 4-2 Carolina.

For Washington, Leonard was the one player who generated consistent production, finishing with two assists. Holl's goal was a lone bright spot in a game the Capitals never controlled.

Carolina improved to 6-1-1. Washington sits at 3-3-0 with six points. Holl's snap shot in the second period now stands as his only goal of the season.
