Commanders can't hold an early lead in Detroit, fall to Lions 17-13

Washington jumped ahead on Joshua Josephs' first-quarter scoop-and-score, but Joshua Dobbs' 50-yard touchdown run and a tight second half sent the Commanders home with a preseason loss. Rookie kicker Drew Stevens went 2-for-2.

The Commanders' preseason trip to Detroit started about as well as a road game can and ended the way too many August nights do — with a lead that slowly slipped away. Washington grabbed an early edge but could not hold it, falling 17-13 to the Lions on Saturday.

The good news came fast. On Detroit's opening possession, Joshua Josephs turned a strip-sack into points, scooping up the loose ball in the end zone for a defensive touchdown. Drew Stevens — the undrafted rookie who won Washington's kicking job over Jake Moody this month — tacked on the extra point for an early 7-0 lead.

Detroit answered in a hurry. Quarterback Joshua Dobbs broke contain and raced 50 yards for a touchdown to tie the game, the kind of improvised play that flips a quiet preseason night. Dobbs finished with 53 rushing yards and the score despite a pair of turnovers, according to ESPN's account of the game.

The second half turned into a back-and-forth of field goals and short touchdowns. Stevens nudged Washington back in front with a 27-yard field goal in the third quarter, but the Lions reclaimed the lead on Trayveon Williams' 1-yard plunge in the closing seconds of the period. Stevens trimmed the margin to 14-13 with a 32-yard kick early in the fourth, and Jake Bates' 37-yard field goal with 2:26 to play supplied the final score.

Behind center, backup quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis was sharp in relief, completing 11 of 14 passes for 162 yards. Nick Nash was his most reliable target, pulling in a pair of catches for 62 yards, while Kaytron Allen paced the ground game with 30 yards on 10 carries.

With Jayden Daniels and most of the projected starters held out — Dan Quinn has made clear he is comfortable keeping his franchise quarterback on the sideline through the preseason — the evening was mostly about roster math. Stevens' 2-for-2 afternoon was a quiet bit of reassurance at a spot Washington reshuffled just weeks ago.

The Commanders wrap up their preseason schedule against the Baltimore Ravens on Aug. 28 before the games start to count.
