How long has Muriel Bowser been mayor of Washington, D.C.?

Muriel Bowser has been mayor of Washington, D.C. since January 2, 2015, making her tenure more than 11 years as of 2026. She is currently in her third consecutive four-year term, which runs through January 2, 2027. She has announced she will not seek a fourth term.

Muriel Bowser has been mayor of Washington, D.C. since January 2, 2015, putting her tenure at more than 11 years as of 2026. She is currently serving her third consecutive four-year term, which runs through January 2, 2027. In November 2025, she announced she will not seek a fourth term.

Bowser's path to the mayor's office

Bowser has served her hometown in elected office since 2004, first as an Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner (2004 to 2006), then as a Member of the DC Council (2007 to 2015), and as mayor since 2015.

Before becoming mayor, she was the Ward 4 councilmember on the Council of the District of Columbia, first elected in a special election in 2007 and re-elected in 2008 and 2012. She won that 2007 special election to fill the Ward 4 seat vacated by former D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty.

Bowser took office January 2, 2015, as mayor of the District of Columbia. She declared that morning before a crowd of 10,000: "It's a new day in Washington, a fresh start for all of our families that call DC home."

Three terms, one historic record

On November 6, 2018, Bowser became the first woman ever re-elected as the mayor of Washington, D.C., and the first mayor to earn a second term in 16 years.

She then ran for a third term in 2022 and won decisively. Bowser sailed to victory as only the second person to secure three consecutive terms as D.C. mayor. The only other person to have achieved that was Marion Barry. Bowser led with more than 76% of the vote over Libertarian Dennis Sobin, Republican Stacia Hall, and independent Rodney Grant.

She was sworn in for that third term as the first African American woman ever elected to three four-year terms as mayor of an American city.

No term limits, but a voluntary exit

The mayor of D.C. is not subject to term limits. Bowser could have run again. She chose not to.

On November 25, 2025, Bowser announced she would not seek a fourth term. "It was time for me to pass the baton on to the next set of leaders who are going to take our city to the next level," she told NBC4 in an interview at her home.

Her current term ends on January 2, 2027. The 2026 Washington, D.C., mayoral election will be held on November 3, 2026, with primary elections having taken place on June 16, 2026.
