Howard pulls away from Hampton 27-13 behind Scroggins and a steady kicking game

The Bison moved to 2-3 on the season with a road win over the Pirates, getting a big second-half touchdown pass and enough field goals to keep Hampton at arm's length all afternoon.

Howard beat Hampton 27-13 Saturday at Audi Field, grinding out a win that was never quite comfortable but never really in doubt after halftime.

Hampton drew first blood. Brett Starling put the Pirates up 3-0 with a 28-yard field goal midway through the first quarter. Howard answered before the period ended, Travis Kerney punching it in from two yards out, Matt Conord adding the extra point for a 7-3 lead the Bison would not give back.

The second quarter belonged to Howard early. Eden James ran it in from two yards out to push the lead to 14-3. Hampton responded with its only touchdown of the game, Xavier Brookins connecting with Nare Means on a 32-yard strike to cut it to 14-10. Then, right at the half, Conord drilled a 25-yard field goal. Howard went into the locker room up 17-10.

Conord added a 39-yarder in the third quarter to stretch it to 20-10. Hampton's Starling answered with a 39-yard field goal of his own early in the fourth, pulling the Pirates within seven. That was as close as they'd get.

Ja'Shawn Scroggins settled it. With just under ten minutes left, he found Billy Roberson II down the field for a 52-yard touchdown. Conord's kick made it 27-13, and that was the ballgame.

Scroggins was the engine all day. He completed 23 of 34 passes for 267 yards, threw the one touchdown, and carried the ball 16 times for 64 more yards on the ground. Se'Quan Osborne caught four passes for 64 yards to lead Howard's receivers.

For Hampton, Brookins finished 13 of 22 for 193 yards and the one touchdown, but the Pirates' ground game never got going. Gracen Goldsmith led the Hampton rush with just 28 yards on eight carries. Noah Colon had the most productive day among Hampton's pass catchers, pulling in four receptions for 73 yards.

The Pirates dropped to 1-5. Conord's three field goals turned out to be the difference in the margin.
