Howard pulls away late to beat Morehouse 31-17 at Greene Stadium

The Bison used a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to put away the Maroon Tigers and improve to 3-4 on the season.

Howard held off Morehouse College 31-17 Saturday at Greene Stadium, turning a tight game into a comfortable win with two late scoring runs. The Bison move to 3-4. Morehouse drops to 3-5.

It was not a clean first half. Howard got on the board early on a Matt Conord 34-yard field goal, then watched Morehouse answer with a Miles Scott 9-yard touchdown run to go up 7-3. Ja'Shawn Scroggins tied things up before halftime with a 16-yard scoring run, but a Cyar DeBose 34-yard field goal as time expired kept it level at 10-10 going into the break.

The third quarter is where the game changed. Eden James broke free for a 61-yard touchdown run with just over 11 minutes left in the period, and that sprint put Howard ahead for good. Morehouse answered quickly. Scott found Noah Rhodes for a 10-yard scoring pass to cut the gap to 17-17 with 7:31 left in the third. But that was as close as the Maroon Tigers would get.

Howard scored twice in the fourth quarter and never let Morehouse back into it. Scroggins punched in a 1-yard run with 6:50 remaining, then Travis Kerney added a 7-yard score with 48 seconds left to seal it.

James finished with 120 rushing yards on 13 carries. Scroggins handled the passing duties and went 17 for 27 for 128 yards in addition to his two touchdowns on the ground. CJ Neely led the receivers with three catches for 30 yards.

Scott had a rough afternoon for Morehouse, completing 17 of 44 passes for 179 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Chase DeVaughn carried 15 times for 67 yards. Jeremiah Gibson was the most productive Morehouse receiver, pulling in four catches for 84 yards.

Kerney's 7-yard run with under a minute to play was the final nail, and Conord's extra point made it a two-score game that was never in doubt by then.
