Is parking free on Sundays in DC?

For most of Washington, D.C., yes, street meter enforcement stops on Sundays, so you can park at a metered spot without paying. Metro garage and lot parking is also free on Sundays. The big exception: the National Mall. NPS meters there run every day except Christmas, so plan accordingly.

For most of Washington, D.C., yes, meter enforcement stops on Sundays, letting you park at a metered spot for free. Metro garage and lot parking is also free on Sundays. The major exception is the National Mall: NPS-managed meters there run every day of the year except December 25, so if you're headed to the monuments, bring a credit card or the ParkMobile app.

How DC street meter enforcement actually works

Most meters in the city run Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., with busier commercial areas extending to 10 p.m. The standard metered rate is $2.30 per hour.

Sundays and federal holidays bring free metered parking for most of the city, but not everywhere. Read the sign. That last part isn't a throwaway warning. Some high-demand areas have seven-day enforcement, so never assume based on the day alone.

The National Mall: a critical exception

If your Sunday plans involve the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, or any of the Smithsonian museums, stop and read this carefully.

National Park Service meters on the Mall are available daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., including weekends and holidays, except December 25, at $2.30 per hour, with a maximum session of 3 hours. Enforcement is handled by DC's Department of Public Works.

The NPS put those meters in starting in 2017 specifically to turn over spaces faster and fund park improvements. The rate is $2.30 per hour, enforced from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day of the year except December 25. Sunday is not a day off here.

The metered streets along the Mall include Constitution Avenue NW (between 15th and 23rd Streets NW), Independence Avenue SW, Jefferson Drive SW, Madison Drive NW, and Ohio Drive SW near East Potomac Park. The meters accept credit and debit cards only, no cash or coins, and you can also pay through the ParkMobile app.

Free alternatives near the Mall on Sundays

Ohio Drive SW near the Jefferson Memorial and East Potomac Park has free street parking, but it fills fast on weekends, arrive before 9 a.m. Note that Parking Lots B and C on Ohio Drive SW are currently closed through 2030 due to a construction project, so available spaces there are tighter than they used to be.

Metro lots: free all weekend

Metro offers daily parking at 40 Park and Ride locations across the system, and parking is free on weekends and federal holidays for Metro riders. The official WMATA page for Greenbelt station, for example, lists the daily fee as $4.95 or $8.95 Monday through Friday, and free on weekends and federal holidays.

That covers suburban Maryland and Virginia stations, too, Greenbelt, Huntington, Franconia-Springfield, and Wiehle-Reston East among them. Drive to the station Sunday morning, park free, and take the train in.

Holidays follow the same rule, mostly

Parking regulations are suspended on federal holidays including New Year's Day, MLK Day, Inauguration Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day. DC Emancipation Day (April 16) also suspends city meters. Again, the National Mall is the exception on all of those days except Christmas.

One more thing: street sweeping still counts

Free meter day does not mean free from every restriction. From March 1 through October 31, street sweeping takes place on a regular schedule in Washington, D.C., typically between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. If you're caught blocking a street sweeper, you'll be fined $45. Sweeping signs are enforced regardless of day, including Sundays.
