Navy drops to 1-3 after falling short at Falcon Stadium, 14-9

The Midshipmen couldn't find the end zone when it counted, leaving Colorado Springs with their third loss in four games.

Navy left Falcon Stadium on Saturday with a 14-9 loss to Air Force, falling to 1-3 on the year with no obvious answers on offense.

The Falcons controlled the second period. Liam Szarka punched in a 1-yard touchdown run at the 9:11 mark to get Air Force on the board first. Navy answered with a 29-yard field goal from N. Bartley with 2:21 left in the half, but Szarka found the end zone again just 1:48 later on an 8-yard run. That sequence put Air Force up 14-3 going into halftime, and the Midshipmen never fully closed the gap.

Jackson Gutierrez gave Navy life in the third quarter. He found Truman Brasfield streaking downfield for a 68-yard touchdown strike with 6:59 on the clock, cutting the deficit to five. The two-point conversion failed, though, leaving Navy at 14-9. That's where it stayed.

Gutierrez finished 7 of 15 for 140 yards and that one score. Brasfield made the most of his lone catch. Michael Barrow carried nine times for 44 yards on the ground, though Navy's rushing attack couldn't generate enough to keep drives alive consistently.

Szarka did the heavy lifting for Air Force on both sides of the ball. He went 6 of 11 through the air for 82 yards, threw two interceptions, and still walked away as the game's most important player by carrying 25 times for 81 yards and both touchdowns. Jonah Dawson hauled in three catches for 39 yards as the Falcons' top receiver.

Air Force moves to 3-1. Navy has now lost three straight after opening the season with a win, and Gutierrez's 68-yard connection with Brasfield stands as the lone highlight in a afternoon that otherwise belonged to Colorado Springs.
