Wizards fall one point short in New Orleans, drop to 2-2

Washington took Anthony Davis and Trae Young to Smoothie King Center and still couldn't hold on, losing 107-106 to the Pelicans in a game that came down to the final possession.

One point. That's all that separated Washington from a road win Monday night at Smoothie King Center. The Pelicans escaped with a 107-106 victory to move to 3-1, while the Wizards slide back to even at 2-2.

Anthony Davis led Washington with 14 points and 11 rebounds. He got going early, converting a 1-foot layup, a 10-foot pullup, and a 17-foot fadeaway. Trae Young ran the offense and finished with 7 assists, including the feed that set up Davis for that first layup and a connection with AJ Dybantsa for a 1-foot dunk.

Dybantsa scored. Kyshawn George hit a 16-foot pullup. Karlo Matkovic got on the board off a Derik Queen assist. Washington had enough pieces moving in the first period to stay competitive, but New Orleans answered every time.

Saddiq Bey was the Pelicans' top scorer with 19 points. Jeremiah Fears controlled New Orleans' offense from the point, racking up 5 assists and finding teammates for a series of layups and dunks that put real pressure on the Wizards' defense. Yves Missi cleaned up inside, grabbing 7 rebounds and scoring on an alley-oop dunk and a straight-ahead dunk off Fears feeds.

Zion Williamson got loose for two baskets in the first period, including a driving layup. Trey Murphy III threw down a 1-foot dunk and assisted on one of Williamson's buckets. Herbert Jones added a running layup off a Fears pass.

Washington put up 106 points on the road. It wasn't enough. The Pelicans held on for a single point that now sits in the loss column for the Wizards.
