Drake is reportedly in the running to headline Coachella 2027, twelve years after he last topped the bill

Hits Daily Double set off a wave of festival speculation this week, placing Drake and SZA among the leading candidates for the April festival's remaining headliner slot.

Drake is reportedly in the running to headline Coachella 2027, twelve years after he last topped the bill

One tip-sheet item dropped on October 2, and the internet has not stopped talking since. Complex reports that Hits Daily Double named Drake as a strong contender in discussions for a headlining slot at Coachella 2027, which would be his first time closing out the festival since 2015. The note was characteristically brief. The reaction was not.

Drake is reportedly in discussions for Coachella 2027 as organizers look to fill a remaining headlining spot, and a deal would mark his first top-billed appearance at the festival since 2015. He is far from alone in the mix. The same follow-up report from Hits Daily Double also placed SZA among the leading candidates for a headline slot. Hits Daily Double had previously reported that Tame Impala, Dua Lipa and Fred Again.. are expected to be part of the 2027 festival, while BTS, SZA, Oasis and Radiohead had reportedly been pursued for another headlining spot.

Important caveat, and it is a big one: no official announcement has been made, meaning the reported lineup remains subject to change, and fans will have to wait for Coachella organizers to confirm the headline acts. XXL notes that "in the discussion" is not a confirmed booking, and says it has reached out to Drake's team for comment, placing the story firmly in rumor territory for now.

That said, the timing is hard to ignore. Drake released three albums in 2026, Iceman, Maid of Honour and Habibti, followed by the FOMO short film and an expanded Habibti (FOMO) release. He has been on a relentless creative run for most of the year, and a major live platform would be a logical next move. In an interview with Etalk Canada in September, Drake said, "Obviously, tour is coming, and other things on the horizon," adding that "we'll be out, you know, 2027 to see everybody again across the world."

What makes the timing notable is his upcoming world tour in support of ICEMAN. During the rollout for FOMO, Drake confirmed plans to tour globally in 2027, and Coachella's April dates could slot in naturally with that schedule. Coachella 2027 runs April 9 to 11 and April 16 to 18 in Indio, California.

His Coachella history is a whole story by itself. His previous headline appearance came shortly after the release of If You're Reading This It's Too Late in 2015, and he closed both Sunday nights, with Madonna's surprise appearance and their onstage kiss becoming one of the most discussed moments of his set. He returned in 2017 as a guest during Future's performance, joining him for songs including "Jumpman," their collaboration from What a Time to Be Alive. A return to the top of the poster would be a different proposition entirely.

The speculation has landed hard on social media. Fans are already reacting to the rumored Coachella 2027 return with takes like "OVOChella would be a movie." Prediction markets moved fast too. On Kalshi, Drake's odds of headlining Coachella 2027 sit at 79 percent, with SZA close behind at 51 percent.

For SZA, the timing is a little murkier. She is being considered, although it remains unclear whether she has new music planned, and she remains one of R&B's major crossover artists with an extensive catalogue that could support a headline performance. SOS is still sitting on charts years after its release. A Coachella set built around that record, with or without new material, would not need much of a pitch.

The BTS angle is worth noting. Reports indicate BTS pulled out of negotiations, which would explain why organizers are now looking at Drake and SZA to fill what Rolling Out describes as the most high-profile remaining slot. BTS's withdrawal, if accurate, opened a window, and apparently more than one name is ready to walk through it.

Meanwhile, in separate news that landed the same week, A$AP Rocky announced a four-year full-tuition scholarship for a student to attend the Roc Nation School of Music, Sports & Entertainment at Long Island University. Announced Tuesday, October 6, the scholarship will go to one first-time freshman for Fall 2027. In a statement shared with Complex, Rocky said: "I'm a big believer in creating your own lane and giving people the opportunity to do the same. There are so many talented young people with ideas, ambition, and something important to say. This scholarship is about helping one of them turn that vision into something real." Other artists who have established scholarships for students at the Roc Nation School include DJ Khaled, Megan Thee Stallion, NBA All-Star LaMelo Ball and Grammy-winning engineer Young Guru, who also serves as Director of the Music Technology, Entrepreneurship & Production program. Applications close December 15, 2026.

Back to the desert. The Coachella report is still a report, and festival lineups have a long history of names appearing in industry columns months before anything goes official or quietly disappearing without explanation. Some are more cautious, pointing out that tip sheet whispers about festival lineups do not always pan out, and that "discussion" can mean anything from a serious offer to a passing idea. The official announcement is not expected until sometime in January, per Vegas Insider.

Until then, every Drake move gets read as a clue. His next Instagram post. His next feature. The songs he puts on streaming. That is the specific kind of attention Coachella speculation creates, and whoever booked the conversation knew exactly what they were doing when they let that column item out into the world.
