George Mason rolls past Coppin State 68-51 to open home slate 2-0

Baraka Okojie led the Patriots with 14 points and Efeosa Oliogu-Elabor dished out six assists as George Mason handled Coppin State comfortably at EagleBank Arena.

George Mason is 2-0. The Patriots handled Coppin State 68-51 on Saturday at EagleBank Arena, putting together a first half that made the final score feel about right.

Baraka Okojie was the story offensively. He finished with 14 points, hitting both of his free throws and setting up teammates repeatedly. Efeosa Oliogu-Elabor ran the floor and ended the game with six assists, the most by any player on either side.

Emmanuel Kanga did the dirty work. He pulled down six rebounds, tops on the team, and kept finding ways to score around the basket. He converted a tip-in layup, two additional layups, and had Makhai Valentine and Shane Pendergrass setting him up along the way. When a ball was live near the rim, Kanga had a way of ending up with it.

Pendergrass had his moments too. He drained a 27-foot three-pointer off an Okojie assist and added a 7-foot jumper, also with Okojie finding him. He finished with two makes from the free throw line as well.

Coppin State's best contributor was Tafara Gapare, who knocked down a 26-foot three-pointer in the first half with Brendan Johnson assisting. Gapare led the Eagles with 12 points. Johnson finished with two assists. Camaren Sparrow grabbed four rebounds to lead Coppin State on the glass, but the Eagles fell to 0-2 on the young season.

Brendan Johnson also knocked in an 18-foot jumper for the Patriots in the opening half, giving George Mason contributions up and down the lineup. Elijah Jones added a pullup jumper from 11 feet plus a free throw, with Malik Presley assisting on the field goal.

The 17-point margin tells the story plainly enough. George Mason controlled the boards, moved the ball, and got to the line when it mattered. Coppin State never really threatened to change the game's direction after the first half scoring runs.

Kanga's tip-in, which opened the scoring, set the tone from the opening minutes.
