Aaron Donald is back, and the Rams just became the scariest team in football

At 35, with two years of rust, Aaron Donald signed a one-year deal to return to the Rams and line up next to Myles Garrett. The NFL season hasn't started yet, and Los Angeles is already everyone's problem.

Aaron Donald is back, and the Rams just became the scariest team in football

He walked away in the spring of 2024 with a Super Bowl ring, three Defensive Player of the Year awards and what seemed like a very final goodbye. Then Myles Garrett showed up in Los Angeles, and Aaron Donald couldn't stay retired.

Defensive tackle Aaron Donald is coming out of retirement and will play for the Los Angeles Rams in 2026 on a one-year, $20 million contract, as reported by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport and ESPN's Adam Schefter. The announcement landed Sunday, August 30 - eight days before the regular season opener - and immediately reshuffled every Super Bowl conversation.

Donald, 35, is a three-time Defensive Player of the Year and an eight-time first-team All-Pro who last played in the NFL in the 2023 season. Two full years off. And he's walking back into arguably the most loaded defensive front the league has seen in a generation.

What pulled him back

The answer, essentially, is Garrett. The Rams had stacked their team, including acquiring reigning Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett, and that was enough to lure Donald back. Donald said in June that the Garrett trade "for sure got me thinking" and that he wanted to see if "that fire can light back up."

He took a key step in that process on August 5 when he worked out with the Rams, and he tried out again for the team 11 days later. And then, Sunday, it was done. His wife was the final piece. "If the wife wasn't happy it wasn't gonna get done," Donald said after signing. "My wife was on board and she was with me 100%."

At his press conference Sunday, Donald talked about his new teammate: "I talked to Myles... We teammates now... Hopefully we do some special things together."

The deal and what it could pay out

The base is $20 million, but the structure is built for October and beyond. Donald's potential earnings include a base salary of $10 million, a wild-card round incentive of $1.25 million if he's active and meets a 15 percent defensive snap threshold, a divisional-round incentive of $1.25 million under the same conditions, a conference championship incentive of $2.5 million contingent on winning and playing at least 20 percent of defensive snaps, and a Super Bowl incentive of $2.5 million with the same snap requirement. The maximum payout for Donald in 2026 is $30 million.

In other words, the Rams built a contract that pays Donald more the deeper they go. If Los Angeles wins it all and he's on the field for it, he cashes out at $30 million for one season at age 35. That's the bet.

What the Rams now have

The roster Sean McVay has assembled in 2026 is genuinely absurd. The Rams include Donald, Garrett, former Chiefs All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie, former All-Pro receiver Davante Adams, fellow wideout Puka Nacua, and quarterback Matthew Stafford, the reigning league MVP.

On the defensive line alone, the numbers between Donald and Garrett are staggering. Between the two linemen, Garrett and Donald have won five Defensive Player of the Year awards and have recorded a combined 236.5 sacks during their careers. Garrett set the NFL's single-season sack record last year - 23. Donald, in his prime, was the best interior pass-rusher the sport has ever produced.

The move further catapulted the Rams into the betting favorite to win Super Bowl LXI. That's saying something, because they were already favorites before Sunday.

McVay, as expected, isn't promising anything about Week 1. "Good to be able to get Aaron back into the mix," McVay said. "You guys know how close we are and there's been a lot of dialogue that we've had and excited to be able to just take it a day at a time. I'm not going to talk about any sort of plans. It's going to be a day at a time for us."

The obvious question: can he actually do this?

Two years away from football at 35 is not nothing. No one knows exactly what caliber of player Donald will be at 35 years old, with two seasons of rust. That's just honest. But the people who have watched him work this summer aren't worried. His viral workout videos and previous greatness suggest he can still do some significant damage. McVay himself said before the signing was official: "Bet you he can still do it at a pretty high clip."

Donald doesn't need to be the player he once was. If he's anywhere from 60 to 80 percent of his previous level, he will remain a force, because the Rams are loaded up front, starting with Garrett. That's the real point. Donald doesn't have to carry anything. He just has to be Aaron Donald-ish, and the defense around him covers the rest.

Donald also joins the list of notable NFL players to return after a brief retirement, which includes Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski, Philip Rivers, Marshawn Lynch, Deion Sanders, and Reggie White. He's in good company on that list. Most of them, it worked out.

One other note from cutdown day

While Donald's return dominated the weekend's headlines, roster cutdown day Sunday produced its own notable casualty. The Tennessee Titans officially moved on from quarterback Will Levis, waiving him as the team trimmed its roster to 53 players ahead of the 2026 season.

It's a hard fall. The Titans selected Levis with the 33rd overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, and he quickly generated excitement during his rookie season, throwing four touchdown passes in his first NFL start against the Atlanta Falcons. He started 21 games for Tennessee over 2023 and 2024, finishing with a 5-16 record while throwing 21 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. Then the injuries hit, the Titans used the first overall pick in 2025 on Cam Ward, and that was that.

In a bit of a surprise, Levis went unclaimed on the waiver wire, meaning no other NFL team wanted him to be a backup. Three years ago he was a projected franchise quarterback. Today he's a free agent looking for any team that will have him.

The NFL's opening week is September 9. Donald will be getting acclimated. Levis will be watching from somewhere else.
