Howard survives a fourth-quarter comeback scare to beat Morgan State 26-20 in overtime

The Bison trailed with under eight minutes to play, then forced overtime and won it on an 87-yard pick-six from Ben Chandler IV.

Howard went to Baltimore and came back with a rivalry win. The Bison beat Morgan State 26-20 in overtime Saturday at Hughes Stadium, finishing 4-4 on the season after a game that nearly slipped away in the fourth quarter.

It was a slow start for both offenses. Morgan State's Alex Amaya hit field goals of 42 and 29 yards in the first quarter to put the Bears up 6-0. Howard's Matt Conord answered with field goals of his own, 38 and 27 yards, to tie it 6-6 at the half. Four field goals, zero touchdowns. Not exactly a shootout.

Then Morgan State woke up.

Cameron Edge connected with Joseph Towler on a 36-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to give the Bears the lead. Edge added another in the fourth, a 14-yard strike to Alex Simmons, and suddenly Morgan State led 20-6 with the game looking largely decided. Edge finished 23 of 33 for 195 yards and two touchdowns, with Towler his top target at three catches for 51 yards.

Howard's response was quiet but enough. Isaiah Freeman, who completed 4 of 6 passes for 36 yards, punched in a 2-yard rushing touchdown to cut the deficit. Then, with 3:09 left, he found Billy Roberson II on a 4-yard pass. Conord made both extra points. Tied at 20.

Roberson was the Bison's steadiest runner all day, carrying 14 times for 76 yards. Semaj Pierre hauled in three catches for 25 yards. The offense was not flashy. It was enough.

In overtime, Ben Chandler IV ended it. He picked off a Cameron Edge pass and returned it 87 yards for the score. Game over.

Chandler's return with no time left on the clock was the last thing Hughes Stadium saw on Saturday afternoon.
