Howard shut out 34-0 at North Carolina Central, falling to 4-5

The Bison couldn't move the ball, couldn't protect it, and couldn't stop an Eagles offense that broke the game open in the second half. Durham was not kind.

Howard went to Durham and got nothing. A 34-0 loss to North Carolina Central at O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium dropped the Bison to 4-5, matching the Eagles' own record. The score wasn't close, and the game never really was.

NCCU put up six points before halftime on a pair of Riley Daniels field goals, a 21-yarder and then a 29-yarder. Not pretty, but it was enough to go into the break with a lead Howard couldn't match. Then, with 1:53 left in the second quarter, Nelson Layne hit Tyree Saunders for a 20-yard touchdown. Suddenly it was 13-0, and the Bison offense had done nothing.

The second half was worse. On the Eagles' first meaningful drive of the third quarter, Joshua Jones found Mehki Wall on an 88-yard touchdown pass. Gone. Just like that. Wall finished with four catches for 145 yards and that score. Jones, completing 9 of 12 passes for 189 yards and two touchdowns, was efficient in a way Howard's offense couldn't come close to matching.

Isaiah Freeman finished 10 for 24 with 39 yards and two interceptions. Forty-two yards on the ground from Billy Roberson II. Nathanial Clark led the receiving corps with 15 yards on three catches. The Bison simply had no answer, and the ball kept ending up in the wrong hands.

Jones added a 3-yard touchdown pass to RJ Lancaster in the fourth quarter, then ran one in himself from 22 yards out to finish the scoring. Gino Addison carried the ball 17 times for 80 yards as NCCU ground down whatever resistance Howard had left.

Daniels converted every extra point and both field goals. He touched the ball on every single NCCU score in one form or another.

The 88-yard strike to Wall was the play that ended any realistic conversation about a Howard comeback. It was the third quarter, 13-0 already, and Jones dropped back and Wall ran straight past everyone. That was the game.
