Georgetown hands Maryland its first loss, 86-74 at Capital One Arena

The Hoyas pulled away from the Terrapins on their home floor Wednesday night, with Jaland Lowe running the show and Pharrel Payne's 28 points not being enough to keep Maryland in it.

Maryland dropped to 1-1 on the season Wednesday night, losing to Georgetown 86-74 at Capital One Arena. The Hoyas, now 2-0, controlled the game from their home floor and never really let the Terrapins get comfortable.

Jaland Lowe was the story for Georgetown. He finished with 22 points, 8 assists and 5 rebounds, and you could feel his fingerprints on nearly every good thing the Hoyas did. He hit a 23-footer to push the Georgetown lead early, then came back and buried a 29-foot three that put the game further out of reach. He also set up Elmarko Jackson repeatedly, and Jackson made the most of it, getting to the free throw line and converting.

Elmarko Jackson was busy himself. He had the opening bucket of the night, a layup assisted by Vince Iwuchukwu, and he knocked down four free throws across two separate trips to the line. DJ Wagner chipped in with a driving layup and led Maryland with 3 assists.

Andre Mills added some punch off the bench for Georgetown. He connected on a 25-foot three and followed it with a 16-foot pullup jumper. That kind of secondary scoring is what made the Hoyas hard to slow down.

Maryland got a strong night from Pharrel Payne. He led all scorers with 28 points, including a first-half layup that briefly kept the Terrapins within reach. Tomislav Buljan hauled in a game-high 10 rebounds. But the Terps could not get enough pieces working together to put sustained pressure on Georgetown's defense.

Robert Jennings II and Chol Machot also scored for the Hoyas in the first half, adding to a Georgetown offensive effort that spread the damage across the roster and made it hard for Maryland to key in on any one threat.

Payne's 28 points were a bright spot, but he needed more help. The Terrapins head home having dropped a rivalry game on a neutral-ish floor to a Georgetown team that looked sharp and rested at 2-0.
