Illinois edges Maryland 20-17 on a last-second field goal at SECU Stadium

The Terrapins led twice and fought back from a fourth-quarter deficit, but a 64-yard Javari Barnett touchdown run and a game-ending field goal sent Illinois home with the win.

Illinois beat Maryland 20-17 Saturday at SECU Stadium, scoring on the final play of the game to hand the Terrapins their sixth loss of the season.

Maryland actually looked like the better team early. Malik Washington put the Terps ahead in the first quarter with an 8-yard touchdown run, and the offense moved the ball well enough to keep Illinois honest through the first half. Washington finished 19 of 29 for 190 yards, though he threw an interception that kept the door open for the Illini.

Illinois tied it before halftime. Katin Houser connected with B. Trimble on a 16-yard score with 27 seconds left in the second quarter, and just like that the Terps' lead was gone heading into the break.

DeJuan Williams gave Maryland the lead again early in the third. He took a carry 18 yards to the end zone, his only touchdown of the day on 19 carries for 57 yards. Illinois answered with a 45-yard field goal from Ethan Moczulski to cut it to 14-10. Still a Maryland game.

Then came Javari Barnett.

On the second play of the fourth quarter, Barnett broke a 64-yard touchdown run to put Illinois ahead 17-14. He finished with 80 yards on just six carries. Maryland's defense had no answer for it.

Sam O'Haire hit a 46-yard field goal to pull the Terps within one at 17-16 with just over ten minutes left. That set up a tense final stretch. Maryland held. Illinois got the ball back. The Terps held again. With two seconds on the clock, Moczulski lined up for a field goal and put it through, ending the game.

Chris Durr Jr. led Maryland's receivers with six catches for 58 yards. On the Illinois side, Collin Dixon hauled in six receptions for 103 yards. Houser was solid without being spectacular, going 18 of 32 for 223 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Maryland falls to 2-6. Illinois improves to 5-3. Moczulski accounted for eight of Illinois' 20 points, including the one that mattered most with the clock at zero.
