Notre Dame rolls past Navy 35-13 as Irish pull away in the second half

The Midshipmen kept it close into halftime but couldn't contain Notre Dame's ground game, falling to 2-6 on the season at Gillette Stadium.

Navy hung around long enough to make it interesting. Then Notre Dame took over.

The Fighting Irish beat the Midshipmen 35-13 Saturday at Gillette Stadium, handing Navy its sixth loss in eight games. Notre Dame improved to 7-1.

Navy actually drew first blood. Nikolas Bartley put the Midshipmen up 3-0 with a 38-yard field goal at 6:43 of the first quarter. Notre Dame answered before the period ended, with CJ Carr finding Marist Gilbert on an 11-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-3.

The second quarter got interesting. Bartley connected again, a 26-yarder to pull within one. Then Navy quarterback Jackson Gutierrez punched it in on a 2-yard run, and Bartley's extra point gave the Midshipmen a 13-7 lead with under two minutes left in the half. That was the high point.

Notre Dame needed 57 seconds to erase it. Nolan James Jr. ripped off a 52-yard touchdown run with 55 seconds left before halftime, and just like that Navy's lead was gone. The Irish went into the break ahead 14-13.

The second half belonged entirely to Notre Dame. James Jr. scored again on a 23-yard run in the third quarter, his second touchdown of the day. J. Walton added a 3-yard score. By the time Carr connected with Jerome Bettis Jr. on a 31-yard touchdown pass with 14:55 left in the fourth, it was a formality.

Gutierrez worked hard for Navy. He carried 28 times for 110 yards and that one touchdown, and went 4 for 7 through the air for 25 yards. There wasn't much else working offensively. Luke Hutchison was Navy's leading receiver on one catch for 17 yards.

Notre Dame was sharper at every level. Carr finished 19 of 29 for 210 yards and two scores. James Jr. piled up 107 yards on just 9 carries. Bettis Jr. led Irish receivers with 6 catches for 78 yards.

Navy's 13 points came entirely in the first half. The Midshipmen never threatened again after James Jr.'s long run just before the break.
