North Texas rolls Navy 49-39 in Annapolis as Midshipmen fall to 2-5

The Mean Green piled up 49 points at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Saturday, with big plays on offense, defense, and special teams doing in the Midshipmen. Jackson Gutierrez had a massive individual performance, but it wasn't enough.

Navy dropped a 49-39 decision to North Texas on Saturday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, a game the Midshipmen had every chance to make interesting but couldn't get over the top. The loss drops Navy to 2-5 on the season.

Jackson Gutierrez was remarkable. He ran 26 times for 228 yards and three touchdowns, added 133 passing yards on 7-of-10 attempts, and even threw a two-point conversion pass to Jake Norris. On almost any other afternoon, that kind of output carries a team. Saturday, it wasn't close to enough.

North Texas had an answer for everything. Tayven Jackson completed 17 of 23 passes for 305 yards and three touchdowns, finding Justin Stevenson twice for big gains, a 45-yarder in the first quarter and a 53-yarder in the third. Stevenson finished with 8 catches for 209 yards. Jahiem White handled the ground work, carrying 20 times for 174 yards and two scores, including a 59-yard burst in the fourth quarter that pushed the lead back out to 10 after Navy had briefly made it a game.

The game turned ugly in the second half before Gutierrez could get Navy rolling. On the first play of the third quarter, North Texas returned a Navy fumble 63 yards for a touchdown, Zakye Barker picking up the loose ball and taking it to the house. That made it 35-20 Mean Green. Gutierrez answered with a 43-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion, then Michael Barrow caught a 15-yard scoring pass to pull Navy within 42-35. The crowd had something to hold onto.

It didn't last. White's 59-yard run came on the very next North Texas possession after Barrow's 4-yard scoring run had cut it to 42-39 in the fourth. That was the killing blow.

Special teams hurt Navy all day. Dalton Carnes returned a punt 76 yards for a touchdown late in the second quarter, turning a manageable deficit into a 28-14 hole before halftime. Navy had pulled within 21-14 moments before on Gutierrez's 1-yard plunge with 11 seconds left in the second quarter. The Carnes return erased that momentum in one play.

Merrick Barlow had 64 receiving yards on two catches for the Midshipmen. North Texas, now 5-2, got its work done with precision from Jackson and explosiveness from Stevenson and White. Navy played hard and Gutierrez gave them a genuine shot, but the Mean Green's 63-yard fumble return in the third quarter stands as the moment the Midshipmen couldn't recover from. White's 59-yard run on the final lead change sealed it.
