The Grammys are about to name their 2027 nominees, and it's basically a two-Olivia race, for now

With nominations dropping November 16 on Grammy.com, the music press is locked in on Olivia Rodrigo vs. Olivia Dean as the album-of-the-year front-runners, though Taylor Swift, Raye, and a long list of dark horses have something to say about that.

Two weeks until the nominations, and the race is already messy in the best way

Fifteen days. That is how long the music industry has left to sweat before the Recording Academy drops its 2027 Grammy nominations on the morning of Monday, November 16. The announcement begins at 4:45 a.m. PT on Grammy.com and the official Grammys YouTube channel. And if the past two weeks of prediction coverage are any guide, the industry's collective blood pressure is already through the roof.

The headline narrative going into nomination day is almost too tidy to be true: two artists named Olivia are fighting for the top spot, with Olivia Rodrigo and Olivia Dean emerging as the two leading album-of-the-year contenders, according to Variety. Behind them sits a queue of genuine threats, Taylor Swift, Raye, Noah Kahan, Bruno Mars, Brandi Carlile, and Rosalía, that makes this one of the more genuinely open Grammy races in recent memory.

The Rodrigo case

Rodrigo has the commercial argument locked. Her third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, came out June 12, 2026, on Geffen Records. The multi-platinum, three-time Grammy Award winner is currently in the middle of the sold-out Unraveled Tour, which expanded to 86 total arena shows across North America, Europe, and the UK after initial dates sold out. That is not a quiet year.

Billboard notes that Rodrigo had already been writing Grammy-winning love songs since her debut in 2021, and that "Drop Dead," the lead single from the new album, has her poised to contend for Best Pop Solo Performance again. Rolling Stone, meanwhile, has "The Cure", the album's second single, on its Song of the Year shortlist. Billboard points out that the first two nominees on its contenders list were the lead singles from Rodrigo's first two albums, and "The Cure" follows the same pattern as the second single from her third.

The tour itself has become part of the argument. Rodrigo offered a limited number of tickets priced at $20 each for the Unraveled Tour, continuing a fan-access program she started on a previous run. That kind of goodwill with the public tends to translate into goodwill with Academy voters, too.

The Dean counter-argument

Olivia Dean is the newer name on American radar but a formidable one. The British pop singer had a major breakthrough after winning Best New Artist at the 2026 Grammys, and her sophomore album The Art of Loving, released last September, puts all of its songs squarely in the 2027 eligibility window.

Rolling Stone calls Dean's Song of the Year contender "a song this big by an artist this traditionally Grammy-friendly," noting that the track has been "ubiquitous for the better part of two years." The outlet's Grammy analysts draw a straight line from Dean to past Recording Academy darlings like H.E.R., Adele, and Alicia Keys, which is about as Grammy-coded a comparison as exists.

The rest of the field

Swift is the silent giant in the room. If she lands a nomination for The Life of a Showgirl, it will be her eighth nod in the Album of the Year category, more than anyone else in Grammy history for strictly solo albums, according to Billboard. That is a record that tends to generate its own gravitational pull.

On the rap side, the picture is genuinely unusual this year. According to Rolling Stone, with Kendrick Lamar and Drake both declining to submit recent projects for Grammy consideration, it opens the door considerably for other acts in the Best Rap Album field. J. Cole's The Fall-Off has been previously nominated three times in the category, and analysts say the fourth run has the strongest musical and narrative case of any in the projected lineup.

Raye, Brandi Carlile, and Rosalía are also in Variety's Album of the Year field, alongside Noah Kahan and Bruno Mars. Raye has four Grammy nominations to her name already, including a Best New Artist nod at the 2025 ceremony.

One thing that is already confirmed

Whatever happens November 16, the ceremony itself is already a bigger deal than usual. The Recording Academy is moving the Grammy telecast to ABC after more than fifty years on CBS, with the 2027 show set for February 7. That network switch, the biggest logistical change the Grammys have made in half a century, means a new audience, new advertisers, and almost certainly a new production sensibility.

The 2027 Grammy Awards will take place February 7, 2027. The nominations, though, land in two weeks. And right now, two artists who share a first name are going to spend every one of those days hearing their name called in the same breath.

Rodrigo is currently at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia on November 7 and 8, then Atlanta on November 11 and 12, both stops on The Unraveled Tour's fall North American leg. She will find out whether she is a nominee while still on the road, somewhere between Nashville and Vancouver. Dean will find out from London. The nominations go live at 7:45 a.m. Eastern. Neither of them will be sleeping in.
