The NSO takes Teddy Abrams and a world premiere to Lisner Auditorium

Grammy winner Teddy Abrams conducts Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky, Michael Tilson Thomas, and the world premiere of Sarah Kirkland Snider's 'Urge' at GWU's Lisner Auditorium on Nov. 12.

The National Symphony Orchestra steps off the Kennedy Center stage for an evening at George Washington University's Lisner Auditorium on Thursday, Nov. 12, at 7 p.m. Guest conductor Teddy Abrams, the Grammy winner and Musical America's 2022 Conductor of the Year, leads a program that pairs Stravinsky's spare Symphonies of Wind Instruments and Tchaikovsky's warm Serenade for Strings with two works for brass: Michael Tilson Thomas's Street Song and the world premiere of Sarah Kirkland Snider's Urge, an NSO co-commission. Bass-baritone Will Liverman is the featured soloist.

Each piece in the program pulls a different section of the orchestra to the front. Stravinsky's winds open austerely; Thomas's city-inflected brass writing fills the middle; then Tchaikovsky's strings close things out. Snider's Urge gets its very first performance that night.

Tickets run $31.35 to $106.75. Lisner is on the GWU campus at 730 21st St NW, walkable from the Foggy Bottom-GWU Metro stop on the Blue, Orange, and Silver lines. The program repeats on Nov. 13 at 8 p.m. at the same venue.
