Woolly Mammoth premieres 'Hanukkah Spectacular,' a comedy about artists trying to make a holiday hit

Max Posner's new play, directed by Tony winner David Cromer and led by Peter Friedman of 'Succession,' opens Nov. 14 at Woolly Mammoth for a five-week run.

Woolly Mammoth opens its holiday season with the world premiere of Hanukkah Spectacular, a new comedy by Lucille Lortel Award nominee Max Posner, directed by Tony winner David Cromer (The Band's Visit, Dead Outlaw). Performances run November 14 through December 13, 2026, at 641 D St NW.

The setup: four Jewish artists locked in a Midtown talent agency conference room over a long weekend, racing to produce a commercially viable Hanukkah show. Peter Friedman, best known as Frank Vernon on HBO's Succession, leads the cast alongside Laura Heisler, Ben Edelman, Ben Beckley, and Ethan J. Miller. Cromer last directed in DC when he staged The Grapes of Wrath at Ford's Theatre in 2003.

Hanukkah Spectacular is the second of five world premieres Woolly is producing in artistic director Reggie D. White's inaugural season. A Childcare Matinee, in partnership with the National Children's Theatre, is scheduled for November 22 at 2 p.m. for parents who can't find a sitter.
