Leonard Slatkin comes home to lead the NSO in a program built on memory

The former NSO music director returns to conduct world premieres by himself and Joan Tower, plus Rachmaninoff's Third Symphony, with saxophonist Steven Banks as soloist. Performances October 22 to 24 at venues across the metro area.

Leonard Slatkin led the National Symphony Orchestra as music director from 1996 to 2008. He comes back this month to conduct a program the NSO is calling Returning Love, three performances across the metro area starting Thursday, October 22 at 7 p.m. at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall in Alexandria, then a midday concert October 23 at the same venue, and a final performance Saturday, October 24 at 8 p.m. at the Music Center at Strathmore in Bethesda. Tickets run $22 to $119 depending on date and seat.

The program pairs two pieces tied to personal history: Slatkin's own Schubertiade, which looks back to the parlor concerts where Schubert and his circle shared new work, and Love Returns by Joan Tower, an NSO co-commission written for saxophonist Steven Banks. Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 3 closes the evening.

The NSO is in its 96th season and performing at off-site venues around the region this year. Tickets and full details at kennedy-center.org.
