Step Afrika brings a staircase and America's 250th to Arena Stage

The world premiere of 'The Fruits of Our Labor' turns Fichandler Stage's theater-in-the-round into a percussive reckoning with Black labor, resistance, and the unfinished American story. It runs through November 1.

One of the Fichandler Stage's four seating sections is gone. In its place sits a wide, steep flight of stairs, the performing surface that Step Afrika! needed to stage The Fruits of Our Labor, a world premiere running at Arena Stage through November 1. The company and the theater have been partners since 2021, and this show is the result: a response, direct and physical, to America's 250th anniversary.

Directors Jakari Sherman, Conrad R. Kelly II, and South African choreographer Vusi Mdoyi draw on Frederick Douglass's 1852 Fourth of July speech and the poetry of Phillis Wheatley. The 80-minute show, performed without intermission, blends stepping, contemporary dance, and percussion. Dancer Nya Christian, a Howard University graduate, is among the featured performers.

Tickets start at $47 by phone at 202-488-3300 or online. On Wednesday, October 14 at 7:30 p.m., the company hosts a Divine 9 Night for members of Black Greek-letter organizations, use code DIVINE for $40 tickets. Post-show discussions follow select performances, including the October 8 matinee.
